If you only have 15 minutes to learn Greek, memorize the following: miláte angliká? (do you speak English?); den katalavéno (I don't understand); parakaló (please/you're welcome); signómi (excuse me), efharistó (thank you); pósso? (how much?); pou eéne ee trápeza? (where is the bank?), ...ee toiléta? (...the toilet?), ...to tahidromío? (...the post office?); kaliméra (good morning), kalispéra (good evening), kaliníhta (good night).

To that add food, drink, public transport, sightseeing, sundries, say about $40 per day for 17 days = $720 You can go way over if you spend a lot in restaurants and bars, or come in for less if you shop in grocery stores and picnic. My suggestion, budget a little more so when you are tired of savory sausage, fresh crusty bread, delicious cheese, fresh ripe tomatoes, ripe wonderful fruit and amazing wine, you can get a cooked meal. We will have a kitchen in the house on Halki so chances are we will do communal cooking for a bunch of dinners and eat well while saving money.
Total Budget, excluding air fare from the US, plan on at least $1672 per person.
For access to your money, the cheapest, most secure, and easiest option is to have a debit card that will allow you to use a cash machine in Europe to withdraw funds from your checking account in Texas. It is a pain in the @$$ for everyone if you only have a credit card since many things require you to have cash. You can bring travelers checks, but you will pay more than just using a cash machine, and if they are dollar denominated, you will need to go to a bank or exchange office to cash them.
