Quail

Quail came to Doberman Rescue of North Texas on September 17, 1999.  She was released to us early from the Forney Road shelter in Dallas because the shelter workers were afraid she would die over the weekend. She had been starved almost to death. Martha, our member who picked her up, had to carry her from the shelter because she could not walk.

We were told that she was taken from the backyard of a house after a neighbor complained that the dog was going to die.  Apparently her previous owners moved out of the louse, leaving her alone and unattended in the back yard.  She was there for two weeks before new tenants moved in.  These "people" left her for more than a week, making no attempt to feed or care for her, and not even bothering to call the authorities to come and take custody of her.

We estimate her age to be three years.  She weighs 38 pounds!  Her abdomen is 3.5 inches in diameter.  That means you can put your hands around her waist, and have your thumbs touch and your forefingers completely overlapped.  She is the worst case of starvation our vet has ever seen.

We are nursing her with boiled lean chicken and broth, and small amounts of dog food.  She has a small meal every few hours.  She is very slowly gaining energy.

She still looks the same, but she seems brighter.  She rested her chin in my hands and seemed to enjoy being gently petted.

Since Sunday, Quail has been fostered by Alice and Ed Lusk in Frisco, Texas.  They report she is eating well and has started to gain weight.  When weighed this morning, she showed a two to three pound weight gain.  She eats well and her eyes are bright. Quail seems to be house broken.  She follows Alice and Ed around and tries not to let them out of her sight.

Quail returned to Doberhof.  She still looks very thin, but there is a bit more meat on her bones.  She has become very clingy and friendly.  She was glad to see us, especially Bruce.

Quail is continuing to thrive.  She is eating three solid meals a day.  Her favorites are now rice cooked in rich home-made chicken broth mixed with with either cooked ground beef or cooked chicken breasts.  She also likes pasta with a tasty meat sauce.  She has become a Daddy's Girl, she curls up under the computer table by Bruce's feet white he is on the computer, and follows him everywhere.  She has started to jump around and play.  She likes to stand and place her head in any unoccupied lap.
Quail continued to grow in strength and character until she was adopted in January, 2000.  She now has a home in Dallas where she is adored by a very nice couple.
